Directors Voice
Day two has ended. After a few technical problems that needed to be solved we now have mayors and other elected officials for all 6 cities. Petitions for county and state offices have been filed. We are looking forward to a full day tomorrow of party conventions.
Our delegates are having a new experience this year learning how to properly raise and lower the American and State flags. We start our day with a flag raising ceremony and end our day with a flag lowering ceremony. This is something that girls state has not done in the last few years.
We were honored this morning to have Dr. James Laurenz to speak to us about the political science course they get by participating in Girls State. All the delegates had chance to register for the course.
Also this afternoon we had the honor of having Portales Mayor Sharon King administer the oath of Office to our newly elected city officers.
Nancy Palladino, Department Vice President of the American Legion Auxiliary gave a presentation about the “BLUE STAR” program. We presented a Blue Star Banner to the delegates who had a family member serving in the military at this time.
The Poppy Story was presented by Mary Lou Lopez and each delegate and staff member placed a poppy on a wreath made of twisted vine, creating a memorial poppy wreath.
